Girls Golf Scholarships
Why not marry your love for golf with college education? Girls golf scholarships are at your disposal in case
you are ever interested in pursuing a college or university degree but without the means to attend.
You must have heard of scouts trying to recruit baseball, football and basketball players for college but
seriously, there are collage golf scholarships as well. And if that is not enough, there are even specialised
programs tailored specifically for golf scholarships for girls.
Before his life went awry, Tiger Woods actually opened a lot of gates for the young generation of golfers. The
African-American-Thai golfer made this sport popular not just for the country-club-crowd but pretty much, everyone.
This prompted many scholarship programs to open up for golf
scholars, diversifying it to include even minorities and females.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association, more commonly known as NCCA, gives out a variety of NCAA athletic scholarships, including girls golf scholarships. There are over
2000 golf scholarships for girls offered in the NCAA and this type of scholarship is granted annually.
More than golfing tourneys
Whilst it’s not as popular as other sports and caters to a very select group of individuals, a college golf
scholarship should not be taken lightly. It’s very competitive and vying for it is similar to the rivalry of
an actual golf contest. The fact that girls golf scholarships are fewer and more specific makes it tougher
since all applicants are in nearly the same level with their ability to play golf well. You have to one-up and be
better than everyone else.
Before even considering this type of college golf scholarship, make sure you are really an effective player.
Train and train hard! You have to realise that you are no longer playing against school in your high school
district. The college level is fierce, sometimes even so much more than professionals. Teach yourself new tricks,
focus and attend workshops. Give yourself an edge over others who are clamoring for girls golf scholarships.
Whilst the amount of college golf scholarships is increasing every year, you have to remember that it’s still
not the most anticipated game—yet. Scouts will probably go as far as researching the No. 1 players in every
district, not taking into consideration the potential of the second string player or the determination of the
third. Girls golf scholarship is largely about knowing how to market yourself properly.
It’s never too early to start preparing for a scholarship. They usually demand good academic records, nothing
lower than a B; letters of recommendation; and essays. So you better be prepared.
The LPGA Foundation
The LPGA Foundation, or the Ladies Professional Golf Association, was founded in 1950 as a tour group.
Eventually it branched out to involve itself with every aspect of golf—including scholarships.
This professional golf association is actually the better choice for women looking for girls golf
scholarships as it actually caters exactly to them. Right now, LPGA offers three types of scholarship for
females:
The Dinah Shore Scholarship makes financial aid available to girls wanting to go to school but not necessarily
to compete in golf. The funding is courtesy of Kraft Foods, Inc. and the scholarship was in honor of a Hollywood
entertainer and LPGA member of the same name.
Other girls golf scholarships offered in LPGA include the Phyllis G. Meekings Scholarship Fund. This is
catered especially for minority female students who intend to compete in golf at the college level.
Lastly, the Marilynn Smith Fund is available for any female high school senior intending to go to an accredited
college or university in the United States whilst playing golf competitively.
If you’re interested in applying for the girls golf scholarships offered by the LPGA, just write them at 100
International Golf Drive, Daytona Beach, Florida.
Other organisations
The best bet is to still go after colleges and universities that actually offer girls golf scholarships
(or any golf scholarship for that matter). But just in case you need further aid, these organisations would be
ideal:
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics also offers scholarships and has less rigid standards than
the NCAA athletic scholarships. You can also get a scholarship to your community college through the National
Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
You can also apply to institution-based scholarships like the Women’s Western Golf Foundation Scholarship, the
GCSAA essay contest, the Anne Trabue Scholarship, and so many others.
Partial and full scholarship
Golf falls under the “equivalency sport” category where coaches are given a budget for scholarships but they are
not expected to divide this relative to the tuition fee of the school. They can split it anyway they want—opting to
budget everything for one outstanding golfer or spread it out for several potential talents.
Girls golf scholarships aren’t that unusual anymore. More and more people are enjoying this sport even at
the college and university levels.
