Graduate School Scholarships for
Women
Most females attending graduate school are exceedingly interested in obtaining graduate school scholarships
for women. Thankfully there are many such scholarships available today for women. Most of these scholarships are
granted through the institution that the woman is attending. Assistance in filling out the application is readily
available through the student financial aid office.
Some scholarships are offered in the form of grants from research institutions and so women should check to see if
any of these are available in the particular field of study she will be undertaking.
Scholarships will be awarded on a wide range of criteria including undergraduate marks and extra-curricular
activities. Letters of recommendation from supervising professors also play a key role. All graduate school
scholarships for women are designed to provide material support for the student in terms of offsetting the costs of
tuitions, books and living expenses. They provide more than minimal support and are designed to give the student
freedom from having to pursue an outside job that falls outside their field of study.
They are also designed to expose the student to an academic way of life which is generally wholly grant funded.
Female students who are pursuing advanced degrees in engineering and computer sciences are particularly able to
obtain graduate school scholarships for women because of new legislation aimed at decreasing discrimination amongst
women in the field of science. Because of this, financial assistance to women is more readily available than it was
even ten years ago. There are so many graduate school
scholarships for women that it can sometimes be difficult to choose which ones to apply for. But all women
hoping to secure a scholarship should apply as broadly as possible because the competition can be quite intense.
Most graduate students are also able to receive student teaching assistance jobs usually working for their
supervising professor providing assistance with things like working with undergraduate students in small tutorial
groups, marking papers or exams. Having a teaching assistant position is like having a job with regular hours and
defined duties. It is not like a scholarship or a bursary which does not have to be paid back and which has no work
requirements associated with it. Some teaching assistants also help their supervising professors with their
research by conducting journal paper searches in the library or writing journal articles for submission in
peer-reviewed journals.
Today there are more women and girls considering pursuing a graduate degree than ever before and all the graduate
school scholarships for women that available today make this even easier than ever before. Fifty years ago there
were only a few female undergraduate and graduate students. Now, the female population at most universities in the
United States is slightly more than fifty percent of the student body.
Many of the larger universities in the United States also offer fellowships for women. Having a fellowship is
somewhat more prestigious than a scholarship and the criteria for securing one are usually even more stringent than
those of a traditional scholarship. If you are a current graduate student you will want to spend a fair amount of
time exploring all the scholarship and fellowship opportunities available to you. You are certainly not limited in
the number that you are allowed to apply so you should apply to all that you are qualified for. Not only will it be
beneficial to you financially to have more than one scholarship it will be an impressive credential on your
curriculum vitae should you decide to apply to a doctoral program.
If you are a minority student there are likely even more scholarships that you are potentially qualified to apply
to. Meet with whoever is responsible for minority student affairs on your campus to investigate amply all the
scholarships that are available to minority students. Undergraduate students who are even beginning to contemplate
pursuing further studies should meet with their financial aid office as soon as possible to get the wheels in
motion. Your graduate degree will be that much easier to attain if you have good financial support to draw on. No
student who is experiencing significant financial need will have an easy time with school.
Having to worry about money puts undue stress on you at a time when you need to be concentrating on your studies.
Having a college scholarship of some sort will go a long way to reducing this kind of stress. A good scholarship
program at your university is worth its weight in gold and you should avail yourself of all it has to offer.
Graduate scholarships for women are especially valuable to a previously disadvantaged segment of the student
population. If you are pursuing a degree in a field like computer science having a scholarship can be especially
valuable because you will be more readily able to compete with your male student counterparts.
Graduate school scholarships for women play a crucial part in helping women foster their desire to further their
education. Graduate school grants and scholarships are
very valuable. While they are difficult to come by, it is not impossible to receive one.
