Non Traditional Student
Scholarships
Are you looking for non traditional student scholarships because you do not qualify for any of the usual
financial aid programs? There are many people who find themselves in this condition for a variety of reasons, and
interestingly, this is increasingly becoming common these days. Simply put, a non traditional student is one who is
not a typical college student for a variety of reasons, the most common one being age.
Most colleges have 22 years as cut off age for getting financial aid but it can even by 25 years in certain
colleges. Re-entry students also come in this category. They are students who leave college for some reason but
come back at a later date to complete their education. Many people in this category are single parents who realize
the need to complete their education or to build upon it in order to increase their earning capacity.
Life as an undergraduate student can be very expensive because of the high cost of tuition fees. It is very
difficult for students to manage without the help of any grant programs because they would certainly have other
expenses to deal with and cannot depend on their parents for support in the manner of younger students. Even a
student loan will not be too helpful because it has to be paid back eventually. The best way that you could get a
good education without having to spend too much money is to look for non traditional student scholarships.
There are quite a few scholarship and grant programs that are meant to be used by non traditional students because
their growing numbers have been recognized. In fact there are many organizations that offer non traditional student
scholarships in order to help people to get back into the work place. It is also a fact that the overwhelming
majority of them offer scholarships to women because this is the group most in need of financial aid.
The Talbot's Women's Scholarship Fund is a very good example of a private scholarship that aims to help women get
an education even if they have had a very long break in their education. This particular scholarship is reserved
for women who want to get back to school a minimum of 10 years after having completed their diploma or GED. If you
are looking for an undergraduate degree from an accredited school then you can apply for one of the 50 scholarships
of $1,000 or the 5 scholarships of $10,000.
Another good one is the Jeanette Rankin Womans Scholarship that is exclusively meant for women of 35 years or older
who have a very low income. Women in this group are usually in dire need of an education in order to take their
families out of poverty but rarely qualify for any other grant program. The Patsy Takemoto Mink Education
Foundation has also done a lot of work to help low income women and kids get an education. It offers a maximum of 5
scholarships that offer a maximum of $2000 each.
Not all non traditional student scholarships are meant exclusively for women. Anyone can apply for a scholarship
under the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Program as long as they are graduate students who are
alumni of any community college or 2 year colleges. This program offers a maximum amount of $30,000. If you feel
that you are eligible for this scholarship you should get in touch with a representative of the foundation that
offers it so that you can be nominated.
Another student group that requires non traditional student
scholarships is those with disabilities. There are quite a few federal and private programs that offer
scholarships for students with disabilities in order to encourage their participation in society and the workplace.
It is very easy to track these scholarships down because they are usually grouped according to disability or
medical condition. For instance, students suffering from Cystic Fibrosis can apply to the Cystic Fibrosis
Scholarship Foundation for the scholarship of $1,000 that it offers. They can also contact the Elizabeth Nash
Foundation to apply for scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,000 so that they can join undergraduate and graduate
school programs.
It is possible to find scholarships for other student groups as well. This includes students who are visually or
hearing impaired as well as students suffering from other disabilities (see our article about scholarships porgram students disabilities for more info).
One of the best known scholarships program for students with disabilities is the Google Lime Scholarship. It offers
$10,000 for disabled students studying computer science in US universities.
Make sure that you do your homework well before applying for non traditional student scholarships so that you
arrive at one that gives you the maximum funding. This will help you get the best results from returning to college
for an education since you will not have student debt to deal with.
