Scholarships for Women
Engineers
Even though there are many scholarships for women engineers, women are still significantly under-represented in
this particular field. Be it because they do not want to pursue a career in this domain or they simply cannot
afford to join a college, the numbers of women in the engineering profession are slightly smaller than those of
men. For undergraduate and graduate students who are majoring in engineering it is not too difficult to get a
scholarship during the academic year, especially because scholarships given in this particular field are extremely
numerous.
Graduate students majoring in fields related to sciences, engineering and other similar disciplines are all
eligible for many of the scholarships provided for full-time students. These scholarships are
also as consistent as they are many. Scholarships for women engineers are also consistent, but they are not
as many as those for undergraduate and graduate male students attending a college or university and studying this
particular subject.
Here are some of the most famous scholarships for women engineers.
The John and Muriel Landis Scholarships
These scholarships for women engineers are for undergraduate or graduate students who find themselves in need of
financial aid. Given that colleges and universities can be really expensive these types of scholarships are exactly
what a student needs in order to get through college. Furthermore, for a mature undergraduate student, for
instance, there is the Delayed Education Scholarship. This scholarship goes to a mature woman who is pursuing a
career in a domain such as nuclear science or nuclear energy or in any other field related to nuclear science.
The SWE Scholarship Program
The Society of Women Engineers gives all sorts of scholarships to women who have been admitted to any type of
graduate programs or accredited baccalaureate programs in order to pursue a career in computer science, engineering
and engineering technology. Keep in mind that other school students are not considered. These scholarships are only
for women and only for women who are pursuing a career in the engineering field. The amount of money given ranges
between $1,000 and $10,000, depending on the achievements and the financial needs of the students who apply.
The AAUW Branch and State Local Scholarship Clearinghouse
Any woman who is pursuing a career in engineering is eligible for these sorts of scholarships. The first thing
you should do is to apply for the scholarship. The application will then be sent to a local or state branch for
consideration and based on the financial need; amounts ranging between $100 and $5,000 are awarded to women who are
pursuing a career in engineering.
Reentry Scholarships
These scholarships are sponsored by the Society of Women Engineers and they were established so as to help women
reenter the engineering field. These scholarships are worth $2,000 each and they are for any non-traditional
engineering student. Any student enrolled in any year of any engineering-based college is eligible for one of these
scholarships, among which worth mentioning are the BK Krenzer Memorial Reentry Scholarship and the Olive Lynn
Salembier Memorial Reentry Scholarship.
Apart from these scholarships for women engineers, there are also many others that can be granted to students. Some
of them are similar in nature to any other type of scholarship and the application process is similar. For
instance, applying for one of the above-mentioned scholarships is similar in nature to a Tylenol scholarship application. You only have to complete the forms and
you are done.
However, there are some scholarships for women engineers for
which the application is different, as it can also consist of presenting some serious academic achievements and
possibly an interview. Either way, women have many chances at getting a scholarship and that is very important,
given that the number of women attending classes at an engineering-based college is rather small.
Other Types of Scholarships for Women Engineers
• The Chevron Texaco Corporation Scholarships. The purpose of these scholarships is to help women who are
either sophomore or junior students majoring in engineering, The amount of money given to each student who gets the
scholarship is $2,000 and it is only granted to students who are US citizens and who are enrolled full-time and
majoring in fields such as mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, civil or petroleum engineering.
• Daimler Chrysler Corporation Scholarship. Any woman, who is a sophomore majoring in fields such as
electrical or mechanical engineering in an accredited school and who has at least a 3.0 GPA, is eligible for this
scholarship. As in the one mentioned above, this scholarship too is granted only to US citizens who are enrolled
full-time in an accredited school with courses in the engineering field.
As mentioned above, it is not very hard to get scholarships for women engineers; the only thing that you need to
do is to be well-informed and start applying for each and every type of scholarship you feel is suitable for
you.
