University of Miami
Scholarships
University of Miami scholarships are a key process in starting the college experience in this university.
They are just as important as being accepted to the college because it is almost impossible to get through all the
four years of studying as an undergraduate without financial aid these days. A financial aid award helps students
in paying for their tuition in addition to paying for laboratory fees and books among other college-related
expenses.
There are two basic types of financial aid. The first type is merit-based financial assistance and the other is
need-based financial assistance.
• A merit-based scholarship is offered to students who have performed very well
academically. However, some merit-based scholarships are given to students who have excelled in a certain field.
Some groups such as the YMCA provide merit-based scholarships. Honour Societies also offer this type of financial
aid not only because of high academics but also because of the merit and the implied prestige that surrounds the
National Honour Society.
For example, an outstanding high school footballer who has made good grades can qualify for this kind of aid award.
Such a footballer does not need to have an average GPA of 4.0 for generally a 2.50 or 2.75 GPA may be all that is
needed because he has shown that he has a high quality of responsibility, skill and determination when it comes to
athletics. Other students who may receive merit-based scholarships are exemplary artists and those who have
excellent leadership qualities.
• Need-based financial assistance is the second kind of financial aid. It determines the
monetary awarding requirements of an individual student. This type of University of Miami scholarships is not offered to those students who
come from well up families or those with a lot of money as can happen in the case of merit-based scholarships. It
helps only the students who are in financial need.
Students’ financial needs or scholarship award decisions are sometimes determined by an extensive survey known as
the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FALSA), which is filled out before the first semester of a student’s
enrolment in college.
Studying at the University of Miami
When it comes to studying at the University of Miami, the graduate and undergraduate students who
study at this university are more than fifteen thousand four hundred. The university has many campuses in locations
such as Downtown Miami, Virginia Key, Little Havana and in southwest Miami-Dade County. In order for students to be
considered for University of Miami scholarships, they need to complete and then submit the undergraduate
application for admission. They do not need a separate application form or any other process in order to be
considered for an academic scholarship.
Students can submit their applications online or by requesting one through the mail. University of Miami
scholarships are limited to the student’s tuition amount or the student’s net tuition after the addition of other
financial aid awards that are also restricted partly or wholly to the payment of tuition. If the university
scholarships together with other awards are more than the amount of tuition fees, a downward adjustment of the
University award takes place until the values become equal to tuition. If University scholarship funds together
with other financial assistance services are more than the total cost of attending the university, the scholarships
are adjusted downwards so that the total financial aid is not more than the cost of attendance.
Jenkins Scholarship
The other type of scholarship that students can benefit from is the Jenkins scholarships. This scholarship is
offered by the Jenkins Memorial Fund which was established in honour of the late Lord Jenkins of Hill head, who was
a former Chancellor of Oxford University. This scholarship is now available for students from other universities in
the Europaenum, which is an association formed by leading European universities. In order to qualify for Jenkins
scholarships, the applicant should be a graduate of any nationality from universities such as the Bologna
University, Charles University, the Jagiellonian University and the University of Leiden among others. Another
requirement is that the students applying should be studying in Social Sciences or Humanities.
Applying for Scholarships
When applying for University of Miami scholarships, students can apply at the same time as they apply
to Oxford just selecting Jenkins Memorial in the Funding section of the Graduate Application Form of the
University. The other scholarships that students can benefit from are the Canadian University Scholarships, which are available in some Canadian
institutions for those students who perform exceedingly well. The type and amount of financial aid award differs
from one institution to the other. The Canadian institutions that have scholarships for international students
include Ashbury College, Nancy Campbell Collegiate Institute, Hudson College, Niagara College, Georgian College and
Vancouver English Centre among others.
Apart from University of Miami scholarships, students can also benefit from other financial aid awards such as
bursaries that are offered by businesses, private donors and other organisations. Some of these bursaries are
awarded to students in certain areas of study and others for any field of study at a certain school. Students with
financial strains benefit the most from bursaries and the amount awarded from each bursary varies.
